Disabled Character RepresentationJess was in a car accident and she became physically disabled and scarred. Throughout the story, she struggles with her injuries and has a hard time adjusting to her new life. Instead of going to physical therapy and high school, she was in the middle of no where and was in a rough relationship with her father. The book highlights how she overcame difficult situations with her disabled body in order to survive.

Finding Inner StrengthIn the beginning, Jess was convinced that she was not strong enough to be able to live in the wild. Most of her time was spent resting and giving her dad a hard time when he was trying to teach her to survive. After her dad's death, she was brought back into reality to whether to survive or not. Through that, she realized that she was stronger than she thought and has a good chance to survive.

After the disaster happened, Jess is left alone in the wilderness to survive. She only had a few days of food and water before she had to decide whether or not to try to survive. Since she saw her dad die she became determined to live and avenge his death. Jess found her determination and willingness to do whatever it takes to survive.
