Say Goodbye For Now by Catherine Ryan Hyde is about four outcasts in a Texas town in 1959. Dr. Lucy lives on an isolated ranch and cares for abandoned animals, but nobody cares or respects a woman doctor during this time. This allows her to be alone and away from the rest of the world, but Pete comes into her life with a injured wolf-dog hybrid. Pete is neglected by his whole family for most of his life and never once had a loyal and true friends. Both of these characters find a connection between each other, but it is not the only connection they gain.
Calvin and Justin Bell, African American father and son, has arrived in the unwelcoming town. The only people who truly wanted to be friends and talked to them was Pete and Dr. Lucy. After a dangerous situation Justin was in, Pete took a liking to him and his father. Then Pete found Justin to be the friend he always imagined and Dr. Lucy has a chance to finally find love again. However, these four people are not allowed to be friends, much less a family, when the whole town turns violently against them. The book follows through the eyes of Pete and Dr. Lucy and how they struggle to overcome the odds of the town to have a true family.
